Developing understanding of climate change and informing effective adaptation strategy development requires significant amounts of research and information to be collated, stored and made available for collaborative research activities and utilisation.

An E-Science Approach To Climate Change Adaptation

According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s 4th assessment report (IPCC 2007), warming of the climate system is ‘unequivocal’ as indicated through a
number of earth observations including temperature, melting snow and sea level rise. With climate change eminent there is a need to explore both adaptation and mitigation strategies. This paper focuses on the former, but adaptation strategies might also inform climate change mitigation strategies.

The e-Resource Centre is a central shared virtual resource being develop for DPI VCCAP and partners which will enable collaboration and the efficient exchange of information and knowledge between institutions, researchers, extension providers, the primary industries sector and policy agencies. The e-Resource Centre will provide access to regional climate change scenarios, maps, models and model outputs, decisions support tools, research reports and communication material.Front page of DPI VCCAP e-RC

The e-Resource Centre has been operationalised with the assistance of VeRSI (the Victorian eResearch Strategic Initiative) and partners include DPI, Monash University, the University of Melbourne, Department of Sustainability and Environment and La Trobe University.

Visualisation technology is also being developed and used to improve the communication of research outcomes and encourage greater involvement in strategy development for climate change.

The following project sheets summarise the e-Resource and Visualisation research theme

The e-Resource Centre (e-RC) is a centralised shared resource to support climate change research across Government and Universities. Initially, the e-RC supports the exchange of data, information and ideas across the DPI Victorian Climate Change Adaptation Program (DPI VCCAP).

Scientific communication can be enhanced by visualisation. Visualisation enables the outcomes of social, economic and environmental analysis to be brought together using visual media to convey meaning to land managers, communities, industry, regional planners and policy-makers.
