Victoria's Surface Water Resources
The North Central catchment management region comprises four sub-catchments - Avon-Richardson, Avoca, Campaspe and Loddon. The Campaspe and Loddon empty into the Murray River; the Avon-Richardson terminates at Lake Buloke and the Avoca discharges into the northern swamps (NCCALPB, 1997).
Lakes include Lake Buloke (situated just north of Donald in the far west), Lake Eppalock (between Bendigo and Heathcote), Lake Boort, Lake Meran, Lake Charon, Lake Charm, Lake Lalbert and Lake Boga (all in the north). Reservoirs in the region include the Upper Coliban, Lauriston, Cairn Curran, Tullaroop and Laanecoorie, all of which are situated in the lower catchment area.

| The Streams, Lakes and Reservoirs map is intended to broadly identify major hydrological features (including water storages) throughout the region. The map was derived from the HYDRO500 and TEMP500 layers of the Department of Natural Resources and Environment’s Corporate Geospatial Data Library. Original data came from Division of Survey and Mapping's VICBASE. This is a 1983 Digital Map of Victoria, which was formed using the AUSLIG 1:250 000 as its base control. |
![]() Lauriston Reservoir | The North Central region’s water resources provide important links with surrounding regions - the Loddon and Campaspe catchments form part of the greater Murray Darling Basin, and the Avon-Richardson is connected to the Mallee, Glenelg and Avoca catchments (NCCALPB, 1997). Water is transported into the North Central region from the Goulburn catchment (via the Waranga Western Main Channel) for domestic and agricultural uses. Major storages in the catchment include Lake Eppalock, Cairn Curran and Tullaroop. Combined with the many other smaller water storages, they provide more than 1.5 Gigalitres for irrigation, urban and domestic uses. Three of the four North Central sub-catchments include extensive irrigation infrastructure which services farmers in this region as well as the Mallee and Wimmera regions - through a Domestic Stock and Supply System (NCCALPB, 1997). The Avon-Richardson is the only North Central catchment with only a small irrigation district. |
