The Barwon Landscape Zone consists of undulating volcanic plains, with an average annual rainfall of 550 mm at Geelong. The predominant pre-1750 vegetation was Plains Grassland and Plains Grassy Woodland. Virtually all land is freehold, with little vegetation remaining except along roadsides. The zone includes significant populations of Coast Bitter-bush, Orange-bellied Parrot, Little Tern, Brolga, Hooded Plover and Eastern Curlew. Biodiversity values are principally associated with Lake Connewarre, Lake Dubban and Lake Gherang Wildlife Reserves, which are the only conservation reserves in the zone. Lake Connewarre is listed in the Directory of Important Wetlands in Australia.
