The Cobboboonee Landscape Zone consists of an extensive undulating volcanic plain. Average annual rainfall at Portland is 870 mm with rainfall generally decreasing with distance from the coast. A comparatively large proportion of the native vegetation remains although vegetation on more fertile soils has been for cleared for agriculture. The predominant vegetation of the zone is Lowland and Herb-rich Foothill Forest. The presence of large areas of native vegetation within public ownership is a distinguishing feature, although these are in large part available for hardwood logging. The zone contains a number of conservation reserves and supports a suite of flora and fauna species that are not found elsewhere in the bioregion. The zone also supports important populations of several orchid species including Swamp Diuris, Limestone Spider-orchid, Green Leek-orchid and Swamp Fireweed along with Heath Mouse, Swamp Antechinus, Powerful Owl, Glenelg Spiny Cray and Spot-tailed Quoll.
