The Corangamite West Landscape Zone consists of stony undulating volcanic plains and undulating plains, with numerous lakes, volcanic eruption points and rugged stony rises. There is a sharp rainfall gradient (600 mm to 800 mm) with decreasing rainfall to the east and north. Prior to 1750, the zone supported extensive areas of Plains Grassy Woodland and Stony Rises Herb-rich Woodland. Virtually all native vegetation has been cleared for agriculture, and lake margins have been altered. However, there are a large number of conservation, wildlife and lake reserves. Significant populations of a suite of wetland fauna species are found in this region including Freckled Duck, Gull-billed Tern, Magpie Goose, Cape Barren Goose and Brolga. A number of lakes are part of the Western District Lakes Ramsar site and the Kooraweera Lakes and Cobden-Terang Volcanic Craters are listed in the Directory of Important Wetlands in Australia.
