The Dundonnell Landscape Zone consists of stony undulating volcanic plains with frequent, steep stony rises. Average annual rainfall is 680 mm at Mortlake and decreases markedly to the north. Lakes and prominent volcanoes are significant landscape features. Prior to 1750 the zone would have supported a range of vegetation types. Plains Grassland either alone or in a mosaic with Plains Grassy Woodland would have predominated on deeper soils while the stony rises supported a mosaic of Stony Knoll Shrubland, Plains Grassy Woodland and Plains Grassy Wetland vegetation. Wetland communities were also widespread. The majority of vegetation in the region has been cleared for agriculture and there is relatively little land in public ownership. There are unusual Stony Rise Shrublands that include recently described species (some of which appear to be endemic to this zone) and important populations of Basalt Greenhood, Small Golden Moths, Pterostylis sp aff bicolor, Fragrant Leek-orchid and Derrinallum Billy-buttons. The protection of Dundonnell-Woorndoo Road is critical to the conservation of these communities and species. Wetlands provide important habitat for Corangamite Water Skink and a number of threatened bird species including Brolga, Blue-billed Duck and Freckled Duck. The Nerrin-Nerrin wetlands are listed in the Directory of Important Wetlands in Australia.
