The Gherang Landscape zone is part of the Otway Plain bioregion and comprises a varied landscape with gently undulating plains in the north, dissected hills in the south, and the coastline which consists of cliffed and beached environments. The zone is dissected by a number of watercourses including Anglesea River, Spring Creek and Thompson Creek, all of which have been ranked in the index of stream condition as being in marginal condition. About 57% of the native vegetation in the zone has been cleared, mostly in the north of the zone for agricultural purposes. Native vegetation in the southern half of the zone is reasonably widespread with large areas retained in public land blocks such as Angahook-Lorne State Park and Anglesea Heath. These large vegetation blocks support a vast range of threatened species including Powerful Owl, Grey Goshawk, Anglesea Grevillea and Southern Spider-orchid. Freehold remnants along the coast also contribute important habitat for threatened populations including Merran’s Sun-orchid. Roadside, creekline and foreshore reserves in the zone retain important and high quality habitat for Rufous Bristlebird, Swamp Antechinus and Hooded Plover.
