The Hughes Creek Landscape Zone consists mainly of the Central Victorian Uplands bioregion, with the plains giving way to the foothills and Strathbogie plateau of the Highlands - Northern Fall bioregion. The predominant EVCs include Grassy Dry Forest, Valley Grassy Forest and Granitic Hills Woodland. Switzerland and Caveat Reserves are good examples of intact Grassy Dry Forest, Damp Forest and Herb-rich Foothill Forest in the area. Several freehold properties also have remnants greater than 100ha on the granitic Caveat highlands. Other important remnants occur along linear roadside strips south of the Hume Highway and provide important habitat for the Brush-tailed Phascogale and Grey-crowned Babbler. Numerous roadsides have been identified as having high conservation values throughout the zone. Hughes Creek and its associated reserves are an obvious focus for biodiversity values in the zone and contain remnants of several threatened EVCs including Valley Grassy Forest and Grassy Dry Forest. The main threats to biodiversity values in this zone include grazing pressure by domestic stock and introduced species such as the European Rabbit, sheet and gully erosion and wild fire in the forested blocks.
