The Lake Goldsmith Landscape Zone consists of undulating volcanic plains and stony volcanic plains. Rainfall generally increases to the east, with an average annual rainfall of 630mm at Skipton. Prior to 1750 the dominant vegetation was Stony Rises Herb-rich Woodland and a mosaic of Plains Grassland and Plains Grassy Woodland communities. Wetlands were prevalent especially in the south and west. The vast majority of vegetation in the region has been cleared for agriculture although relatively large areas of native grassland and grassy woodland remains on private land especially on stony soils. Relatively intact native vegetation is generally restricted to small public land sites. A number of conservation reserves occur within the zone. There are a high diversity of land systems and vegetation types and important populations of Button Wrinklewort, Clover Glycine, Spiny Rice-flower, Adamson’s Blown-grass, Small Milkwort, Eastern Barred Bandicoot, Fat-tailed Dunnart and Brolga.
