The Leigh Landscape Zone consists of undulating volcanic plains, with a wide gorge formed by the Leigh River. Average annual rainfall varies markedly from the south (511mm at Bannockburn) to north (750mm north of Mt Mercer). The former vegetation was predominantly Plains Grassland and Plains Grassy Woodland and although the majority of vegetation in the region has been cleared for agriculture, a number of areas of native vegetation remain on both public and private land. A number of highly significant remnants occur in cemeteries, on road and rail reserves and other public land sites. The majority of land is freehold with only a small number of conservation reserves and streamside reserves. The zone supports several highly threatened vegetation communities and important populations of threatened species including Small Scur-pea, Tough Scurf-pea, Button Wrinklewort, Large-fruit Fireweed, Spiny Rice-flower, Swift Parrot, Painted Honeyeater and various wetland birds. It also contains extensive areas of suitable habitat for Striped Legless Lizard, Golden Sun Moth, Plains-wanderer, Common Dunnart and Fat-tailed Dunnart.
