Mount Eccles Landscape Plan

This Landscape Plan for the Mount Eccles Landscape Zone - May 2003, was produced in collaboration between J. Ross - Environmental Consultant - New Zealand; K. Lowe, C. Boyle & A. Moorrees - Parks, Flora, Fauna Division, DSE.

The Mount Eccles Landscape Zone consists of eruption points and stony rises associated with recent volcanic activity and undulating volcanic plains. Average annual rainfall is approximately 760 mm at Macarthur. Stony Rises Herb-rich Woodland on heavy stony country was the predominant pre-1750 vegetation. The remaining native vegetation is concentrated on public land in areas of recent volcanics on heavy stony soils. There are a number of major conservation and wildlife reserves. Areas of freehold land owned by Aboriginal groups adjacent to Mount Eccles National Park include significant nature conservation values. Lake Condah is listed in the Directory of Important Wetlands of Australia. This zone supports the largest remaining areas of Herb-Rich Woodland in the Victorian Volcanic Plain bioregion and has very high cultural values. It also supports important populations of Curly Sedge, Bell-flower Hyacinth-orchid, Wavy Swamp Wallaby-grass and a number of fern species, and is an important region for Spot-tailed Quoll conservation.
