This document covers the Red Gum Plains Biodiversity Landscape Zone which is part of the Gippsland Plain bioregion. The Red Gum Plains Zone (147,000 hectares) is located east of the Avon River, south of the foothills of the ranges, west of catchment of the Tambo River and north of the inland edge of the Gippsland Lakes. The predominant land tenure of the Zone is private land. It includes the extensive alluvial and coastal plains of the Gippsland Lowlands including wetlands such as Backwater Morass, Blond Bay and MacLeod Morass. Prior to European settlement the zone was dominated by scattered, large trees with a grassy and herbaceous plant understorey. It is now grossly changed, with many environmental implications. Approximately twelve per cent or 18 000 hectares of intact vegetation remain. Of the 36 pre-1750 ecological vegetation classes (EVCs) in the Red Gum Plains Landscape Zone, 28 remain today and 20 are classified as threatened. There are 1062 flora species and 144 fauna species recorded in the Zone.
