The South West Goulburn Landscape Zone consists mainly of the Central Victorian Uplands bioregion, with the Highlands - Northern Fall bioregion extending southeast of Kilmore. The South West Goulburn Landscape Zone has been extensively cleared for agriculture and only remnants of the original vegetation occur on freehold land. A small number of reserves, significant roadside verges and disused railway reserves provide the best examples of pre-1750 vegetation. The predominant EVCs include Herb-rich Foothill Forest, Grassy Dry Forest and Shrubby Dry Forest. The limited amount of native flora and fauna persisting determines the importance of remaining biodiversity assets and their priority for protection throughout South West Goulburn Landscape Zone. Overall, the South West Goulburn Landscape Zone retains a low level of biodiversity significance due to the relatively large areas used for agriculture. There are several important reserves, including Mount Piper Education Area which contains the uncommon Lemon Starbush, five species of Wallaby Grasses, and also supports populations of the Large and Small Ant-blue Butterfly and Golden Sun Moth. The main threat to biodiversity in the South West Goulburn is the continued loss of connectivity between remnant vegetation through the degradation of riparian and roadside habitats, impacts of grazing and dryland salinity.
