Companies like ESRI provide global access to data on-line through its ArcData Online site. Users are able to select their area of interest and then construct a map by filling-in their chosen map ‘construction’ parameters. This site joins the power of a Geographical Information System with Web-delivered information. This is a most powerful combination. Another site is the Australian Coastal Atlas (ACA), initially a component of the Commonwealth Coastal Policy and later a major component of the Coasts and Clean Seas Initiative. It is an electronic atlas or gateway drawing together the combined data holdings of the Commonwealth in the coastal zone.

Melbourne-based Sensis (formerly Pacific Access Pty Ltd.), a Telstra Company publish their Whereis Street Atlas (external site). Users gain access to a set of Universal Business Directory's (UBD) sourced street maps by typing-in a street address. A map is returned along with a UBD map reference. The user is able to navigate to adjoining maps by clicking hot spots on the edges of the displayed maps. The company also publishes paper and Web versions of the Australian White Pages™ directory and Yellow PagesŪ directory web sites and the Whereis geographical search functionality is built into these sites. Fully interactive Whereis Street Atlas maps can be embedded within Australian corporate web sites. Some time ago Sensis was awarded the Australian components of the BMW in-car navigation system development. Using maps from Australia-wide street directories, whose digital publishing rights are owned by Sensis, and maintained by Universal Business Directories (UBD) of Sydney, they have made available accurate in-car navigation possible for all Australian cities. Quite recently Sensis purchased Universal Business Directories outright, giving the company control of paper and digital publishing rights.
