Access to Water

Southern Rural Water operates a number of large dams which have been constructed for harvesting and storing water. These include:
Blue Rock Dam, Glenmaggie Dam, Cowwarr Weir, Lake Narracan Dam and Yallourn Storage Dam.

The Macalister Irrigation District (MID) is the largest irrigation area south of the Great Dividing Range, and is located in central Gippsland. It takes its name from the Macalister River, main source of the district’s irrigation water. The MID extends around the river for 53 000 Ha from Lake Glenmaggie to near Sale. Approximately 33 500 ha is currently used for irrigation, and of this 90% is under pasture.

Licensing is a key component of Southern Rural Water Operations - and involves licenses to take water from either a watercourse as defined in the Water Act 1989, or from a licensed groundwater bore.

Rural water infrastructure in West Gippsland is owned and operated by Southern Rural Water (external link). Southern Rural Water (SRW) is a statutory rural water authority established under the provisions of the Water Act 1989 and is responsible for rural water supply across the entire southern part of Victoria, from the Great Divide to the coast. It's customers are mainly the farmers, graziers and growers of southern Victoria, but they also supply water in bulk to non-metropolitan urban water authorities.
