Working a California pump on the banks of the Snowy Creek, Mitta Mitta,
c. 1896. The California pump was a belt with buckets attached which was
used to drain shallow excavations. The second man is washing sludge in a
timber water race.

Richard Penna at home in Woods Point, c. 1915. At the time of the
photograph, Richard Penna was 85 years old. He had been prospecting at Woods
Point for twenty years. His tools of trade - pan, puddlers, picks and buckets
- are gathered outside the hut.
