St. Bernard Hospice on the Harrietville - Omeo Road catered for early tourists to the Victorian Alps. When this photograph was taken at the turn of the century, skiing was yet to gain popularity as a sport.

The Mt Buffalo Chalet was built by the Victorian government and opened in 1910. Poor roof design and lack of internal lining meant that the first guests came to meals wearing overcoats and blankets.
