A Mallee roller, pulled by a team of bullocks, Southern Mallee, c.1900. The government cleared huge areas of Mallee for the soldier and closer settlement schemes. This roller was probably made from an old boiler.

A Mallee roller at work, Jeparit, Northern Wimmera. This huge log was rolled through the dense Mallee scrub, snapping off trees at the roots or ripping them from the ground. This method, although fast, left the settler to contend with many tenacious Mallee roots. Image Reference : 1(120)

This handbook was issued by the New Settlers League of Australia in 1925. A plethora of these handbooks circulated in the 1920s providing cheerful and optimistic advice to immigrants and returned soldiers.

1924. This book provided many handy hints and advice for farmers. As some
new settlers had very little farming experience, the advice may have been
invaluable.
