Settlers' home at Mardan in South
Gippsland, 1913. Salubrious accommodation such as this humpy was all that
some settlers could afford as they struggled to glean a living from the
land. The original image is in poor condition.

A dairy farm in Gippsland, prior to 1911. Forests of ringbarked trees were features of the Gippsland landscape. The soil is already beginning to creep on the steep hillside that has been denuded of the stabilising influence of live trees.

Dairy cows were
not simply 'machines of production' for settlers but were cherished members
of the household. Ruby, Siren, Le Mode, Chamois and Roughette are proudly
displayed for the cameras, although the names of the people are not recorded.

Harvesting sugar beet near
Maffra, Gippsland. Many of the farmers in this area were immigrants from
Denmark and other parts of Europe. They came to Australia after 1911 under
the closer settlement schemes. One of the conditions of settlement in this
area was that farmers grow at least ten acres of beet for ten years.
