Harvesting sugar beet near Maffra, Gippsland. Many of the farmers in this area were immigrants from Denmark and other parts of Europe. They came to Australia after 1911 under the closer settlement schemes. One of the conditions of settlement in this area was that farmers grow at least ten acres of beet for ten years.
